Birds That Start With U

Have you ever noticed that birds with names beginning with the letter U are not particularly abundant? In fact, there is only a small number of these feathered creatures.

The most widely known one is undoubtedly the uguisu, also referred to as the Japanese bush warbler. These small birds originate from Japan and are renowned for their melodious singing which can be heard echoing through Asia in springtime. The uguisu has dull brown feathers and a distinctive yellow beak, resembling a canary, but with taller legs!

Another remarkable type is the umbrellabird found in Central and South America. This bird can easily be identified by its high crest shaped like an umbrella! Furthermore, umbrellabirds have spectacular courtship displays whereby they spread their wings wide open during mating season. Fascinating!

The last one is the upupa epops or more commonly known as the hoopoe. These birds mainly live in Europe, Africa, and some parts of Asia – further identifiable by its stripy plumage on its back and its crown-like crests atop its head. Fun fact: hoopoes were quite often mentioned in J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter books!
