Quail are small birds, typically the size of a chicken egg. Their backs and wings have a brown hue, with a black stripe along their faces and white feathery tufts on their heads. They make noises such as chirping, clucking, whistling, and beeping.

Primarily feeding on seeds and grains, these birds will also take advantage of available insects when they can find them. Quail usually nest in tall grasslands or scrubby areas with plenty of vegetation for cover.

Additionally, they enjoy fields, pastures, and roadside ditches that provide ample food sources. In more urban settings, parks and gardens may suffice if there is sufficient foliage for them to hide amongst.
